How do I take care of a sand mound septic system?

My husband and I just got a phenomenal deal on a home we purchased. I have always lived in suburban/urban areas with city sewage. This house is out in a rural community with three acres. In the back yard is a huge lump that is a sand mound septic system. I know nothing about these systems. Can anyone give me tips? I had difficulties finding good info via google. I did buy all natural cleaners to start to clean the house, and was told to stay away from bleach.
