There was a mario game for super nintendo...?

That could be played with two players (at least mario and luigi, perhaps there were more characters). I played it about 15 or 20 years ago. There were all manner of mario-esq villains that would walk back and forth on various "floors" of the single screen. I don't even remember what the object of the game was (perhaps just to survive a time period, or perhaps to kill all of the villains). I used to play this game with my cousin and it has sentimental value to me so I'm trying to figure out what it is. Can anyone help me??
